“A PINEAPPLE AND A PINECONE WALK INTO A BAR…”
As a Puerto Rican who became a Pacific Northwest transplant, our founder Gretchen Schauffler sought out what was familiar in nature to surround herself with comfort and thrive in her new habitat. As an artist, she then blended her personal experience into a line of paint colors. This time, as a graphic designer, she crossed a pineapple with a pinecone to deliver dynamic rich colorful patterns for walls.
THE PINEAPPLE, A SYMBOL OF HOSPITALITY
The pineapple was the obvious shape to start with since San Juan, Puerto Rico is the birthplace of the Pina Colada. Where they grew abundantly, pineapples in the Caribbean used to hang on spikes and doorways of homes and businesses to signal strangers they were welcomed. In areas where they were difficult to grow, the fruit meant that those who had pineapples also had access to enough money to cultivate the fruit in greenhouses, signaling to guests that no expense was too much when providing for their comfort. Many linguists believe that the English term “pineapple” derives from early explorers likening the shape of pineapples to that of pinecones. Which brings us to the pinecone.
THE PINECONE, A SYMBOL OF FERTILITY
A pinecone is a protective shell that releases the seeds of the grandest of trees, seeding the earth with a rich environment that feed, nurture and protect animals and humans alike. A powerful metaphor for fertility and growth, the pinecone has seeded the human mind with rich symbolism across all cultures since the beginning of time. Speaking of symbolism, that is exactly what happened when a pineapple and a pinecone became one.
THE PINECAPPLE COLLECTION, A SYMBOL OF TRANSFORMATION
A cross between a tropical pineapple and a northwest pinecone, the “pinecapple” motif is the hero of this wallpaper story; a symbol of transformation. A modern homage to nature. Some look at our DIP PINECAPLE WALLPAPER COLLECTION and see palms, raindrops, and dandelions. Others might see pine needles, waterfalls, cactuses, and windmills. Each pattern is made from this single shape, woven with radiant color, in a luster finish. The one you chose will take on a life of its own in your home. We look to the humble pinecapple for inspiration as we honor, through our designs, your journey to grow, evolve, and create your own life.
Whatever you see, we hope you find yourself in our wallpaper designs!
