Hi. I’m Gretchen Schauffler, the founder of DIP Design Is Personal. Design Is Personal began with a journey that became our company mantra.

My move from Puerto Rico to Portland Oregon in the 1980s could have been a clash of color and culture. Instead, it became a very intuitive personal experience that started with this realization: We outgrow design trends or color schemes, but never who we truly are. And why should we?

Feeling foreign in a new land, I set out to personalize my home with my own design history using color and, what was comforting to me, to build my environment in simple ways. Comfort helped me rise above trends and circumstances to become deeply confident and satisfied with my own personal style. Confidence, color, and comfort are ideas everyone can afford. Something amazing happened then. When others saw me do this, they were inspired to do the same.

My realization became our company mantra: We will outgrow trends or color schemes but never who we truly are. Therefore let’s be true to ourselves and inspire others to do the same. Design is personal—Something to everyone. Only what it means to you matters. 

Create an environment that reflects who you truly are. Doing so feeds you with meaning, purpose, and confidence. It feeds you from within. That’s the power of personal design.

Our mantra offers a novel way to think and talk about inspiration in terms of ourselves. And of course, the mantra would mean nothing if we didn’t live it. We live our mantra by striving for CHIC, COLORFUL COMFORT. These ideas carved a path which allowed me to achieve a personal design with easy excellence. In isolation, they are ordinary words. Together they are intentional and powerful. Through these words, our products aim to manifest a sense of satisfaction and please one can experience daily.

CHIC: Confidently classic and universally appealing. Chic is simple and effortless, providing a satisfying sense of easy excellence.  Our products are decorative but not decorations. They are ornamental but not ornate. Simple to install. Our colors are lush. Our finishes are luxe. We’ve curated and designed only the best so that you can save hours otherwise spent languishing over wood types and styles and bad color schemes.

COLORFUL: Sensational in every way, every day. Color tantalizes our senses whether we’re aware of it or not. It means more to a room than just about anything else. I should know, I started a colorful paint line out of my garage in the 1990s by blending my own paint colors to make my personal happen. My paint line, Devine Color by Valspar, became an overnight success, internationally recognized, and revolutionized the way paint is experienced by consumers today. I brought my experience and sensibility to all of the products we offer at DIP. Believe me—things are about to get more colorful.

COMFORT: There is nothing more deeply distinctive and satisfying than comfort. Comfort is a sign of confidence—confidence in yourself, confidence in your family, confidence in your home. We understand why people fret over home design decisions. Rest assured that not only will DIP products last as long as you need them but that they will stay stylish and fashionable.
